Transgender Awareness Week is celebrated every year between 13th and the 19th of November; this is a time to celebrate and raise awareness of what many trans people face every day. It is also a time to listen to trans voices, learn about other gender identities, and show your support for equality and inclusion.
So, why do we celebrate Trans awareness week? Unfortunately, many trans people face discrimination and are sometimes misunderstood, so spreading this awareness can build a more accepting and safer community. It shows support, equality, and inclusion.
Trans Awareness Week first began in 1999 when a trans advocate named Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded this week to honour Rita Hester who was a Transgender woman who was murdered in 1998, making the 20th of November Transgender Day of Remembrance to honour those that have lost their lives to anti-trans behaviour and violence.
You can share your awareness this week by taking the time to listen and learn, be supportive, respect others and educate yourself through other people's stories and the history.
Happy Trans Awareness Week!
