Last week was Carer’s Week in the UK (Monday, 8th June to Sunday, 14th June), an annual campaign to highlight the often underappreciated work of unpaid carers across the nation! This year, the theme is ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities’, which encourages workplaces, healthcare services, and local organizations to create supportive environments that recognize and value unpaid carers so they do not feel isolated, which the Carers UK website describes as, ‘A carer friendly community is a place, space or organization that values carers and does something practical to support them by identifying carers, listening and responding to their experiences so that they are not left to cope alone.’

Carer’s week, I personally feel it’s vital that young carers are also seen and accommodated for, especially in schools, and youth groups such as Space Youth Project. So often, young carers carry the load of caring with them everywhere they go, which can lead to life becoming overwhelming.
However, it’s important to me that it must be highlighted that caring is not always a burden, or a negative thing, though it can be overwhelming and scary at times. We don’t always need sympathy or pity - sometimes just a listening ear and a good support system can make all the difference.
If you’d like to learn more about Carer’s Week - or just unpaid carers generally - Carers UK have multiple articles on this topic, including the one linked below:
Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a great Carer's Week!
