On the 21st March, Space Youth Project hosted our bi-monthly Space Family Day in Christchurch. This is a chance for us to work directly with the family, parents, and guardians of our trans non-binary young people and provide them support in navigating this transition as a family. We find this is a vital service for our young people's families as they otherwise have very little support in place and we do our best to fill this gap.
Each Space Family Day has a different topic and this one was in high demand, with us looking at the different aspects of legal transition. This includes going over the process of legal name changes, gender markers on passports and IDs, and Gender Recognition Certificates.
We were absolutely delighted to have support from Ellis Jones Solicitors this month, with them giving us guidance on how to pursue these processes AND the fantastic Nicola from Ellis Jones visited us on the day to talk directly with the families trying to navigate these spaces. We can't thank Ellis Jones enough for their support in this area and our parents were incredibly grateful!
It's always fantastic when we come together for Space Family Day and see the difference it makes to the attendees just to know they aren't alone in their journey.
If you are in the process of trying to navigate your child's gender identity, we recommend you book onto Space Family Day!
