Some people have asked, so here’s a little context.
Phoebe comes from a military family and was born in Cyprus, her auntie lives and works with the military on the Falkland Islands, in 2018 Mum and Phoebe age 12, visited Auntie and they fell in love with the Islands, the nature and the wildlife, mum has now got a job with the Main hospital on the Falkland’s and Phoebe is spending a gap year visiting before a planned return to start at Uni.
Here in the UK we are seeing spring creeping round the corner meanwhile The Falkland Islands are bracing themselves for winter with Autumn already here.
Phoebe says: The weather has started to get cold here, We had snow yesterday! I have had a bit of a quiet week because I had the flu and a chest infection lol. Missing you all! I am planning on going on a whale watching trip on Sunday so I’ll send some pictures from that.
I went to Berthas beach and got some pics of some really cute Penguins and there’s a really nice picture showing how low the sun is.
We went on the whale watching boat trip, Phoebe and Mum but sadly didn’t see anything except large pods of Peale dolphins, there was also a wandering albatross flying about as we sailed down a stretch of water called the Berkely Sound. We sailed really close to the lady Elizabeth shipwreck in Whalebone cove Pic 15 near Stanley harbour, it’s huge and been there for years, it was a cool trip, we got soaked though because the wind blew water everywhere.
The population of Stanley is around 2500 which is half the size of Wareham, Phoebe says: there’s maybe like 5 people my age that I know of, most people are middle aged because they have lived here forever, there seems to be lots of toddlers and babies though, most people my age who want further education go to the UK to study paid for by the Falklands government but most say here to farm, be mechanics or be fishermen, most people live on farm settlements with their families.
It’s very isolated here, I really miss fish and chips too much.
The weather has been bad so I haven’t been out much, but we do go out to the lighthouse at Cape Pembroke to see if we can spot whales after work, I am also potentially getting a volunteering job at the National History Archives here.
