This week (20-26th April) marks Lesbian Visibility Week, a national awareness week that allows us to recognise, celebrate, and amplify the lesbian community! This year, the theme of Lesbian Visibility Week is ‘health and wellbeing’ with a focus on protecting our individual and communities’ health and wellbeing during a turbulent time for LGBT+ visibility.
Lesbians have played a vital role in our community, culturally and historically. Lesbian activists have spearheaded the fight against vital policies, like Section 28, and contributed so much to the advocacy and care of gay men during the AIDS crisis that the L was put in front of the LGBT+ acronym (it was previously GLBT+). It is so important we are given the space to acknowledge how lesbians have contributed to and shaped our community.
Sadly, there is still work to do as lesbians face significant barriers in their day to day lives, such as objectification and misogyny. This is further emphasised when we consider the theme of ‘health and wellbeing’ which highlights the inaccessibility lesbians face in sexual health services and access to appropriate care.
You can get involved in Lesbian Visibility Week by platforming and engaging with lesbian voices, download the community toolkit created by DIVA, and look for local events in person or online.
