At Bournemouth group we recently interviewed a new volunteer support youth worker. The volunteer was given the opportunity to ask the young people a question.

They asked the young people “what did you find most challenging the first time you came to Space Youth Project?”

The young people all had their own experience, and this was some of their replies:

“I had lots of expectations, and it took me a while to feel comfortable but then when I did it became consistent as I saw the same people every week.”

“I was really worried it was going to be like school as I have social anxiety and I was worried I would be judged. But I wasn’t judged, and other people have the same interests as me and I don’t have to hide myself here I can just be myself without judgment”

“I was curious what it would be like, but everyone was really welcoming, and I really enjoyed it”

“My first session I came with a friend, and I found everyone was really friendly, it felt like a place where I belonged. I’m not very social and have been trying to push myself out of my comfort zone and make friends and this is somewhere I can as I feel I belong here”

At our rural groups arts and crafts are a very popular activity, and if you have seen our previous blogs you will see lots of different arts and crafts are carried out such as candle making, glass work, mug & jar painting, well this week at Weymouth group they were doing string art, something the young people enjoyed.

In our Bridport group this week, with the help of our Leader in Charge Youth Worker Charity and our volunteer Kev the young people got all artsy making glass butterflies. This was the first time they had done glass work and they all did an amazing job. We certainly have some very talented young people at our Bridport group!
